English

As a language, English provides a major instrument of learning throughout the school.

Our aim is to encourage and develop the students to their full potential, the pupils’ intellect, control, enjoyment and understanding of English. To foster the growth and development of the pupils intellect and feelings.

English is viewed as a single, unified subject, integrating what used to be known as ‘English Language’ and ‘English Literature’.

There are three main strands:

In practice these three strands are independent and inseparable. A variety of approaches and activities form the diet of English experienced by our pupils and most lessons will combine at least two of the strands.

Independent learning is encouraged and valued.

Year 7 - 9 follow a modular course. The work is organised in a series of ‘modules’ each with its own aims, objectives and specified assessment pieces. Each is about half term in duration. These form the ‘core’ of the curriculum.

Years 10 & 11 follow a course leading to GCSE English and GCSE English Literature.
